A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a four-digit number assigned to your business that classifies the type of goods or services you sell. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) use MCCs to determine interchange rates, fraud rules, and compliance thresholds.
Your MCC is set at the account level — all stores under your account share the same MCC. This is how Adyen's Balance Platform is designed; MCCs are not configurable per store.
What It Affects | Details |
|---|---|
Interchange rates | The processing fee your payments are subject to |
Chargeback thresholds | Network-specific dispute ratio limits vary by MCC |
High-risk classification | Certain MCCs are considered elevated-risk by card networks |
Split rule matching | Transaction pricing in Swipe Aras uses MCC as one dimension |
Your MCC is assigned during account setup based on the nature of your business. If you believe your MCC is incorrect or your business type has changed, contact your account manager.
You cannot change your MCC yourself — it must be updated by Swipe Aras and reflected in Adyen's system.
