Understanding your chargeback rate

Your chargeback rate is the most common metric merchants ask about. Swipe Aras surfaces it in several places — most prominently on the Disputes page (/transactions/disputes) as a dedicated tile showing "Dispute Rate" with the formula Disputes / Total Transactions.

The rate is calculated as a percentage:

rate = (count of chargebacks ÷ count of successful card payments) × 100

Both numerator and denominator use the same date range — by default the last 30 days on the dashboard, or your selected range on the chargebacks report.

Important caveats merchants should know:

  • Open and in-defense disputes are counted. The rate includes disputes you may still win on representment. A merchant actively defending 10 chargebacks sees the same rate as one who accepted all 10. The rate is not a final-outcome metric — it's a "currently has dispute records" metric.

  • The Swipe rate differs from card-network compliance methods. Visa VDMP and Mastercard ECP use a different calculation (last month's chargebacks against the prior month's volume). The Swipe rate uses the same period for both. If you are tracking proximity to Visa's 0.9% or 1.8% thresholds, do not rely solely on the Swipe rate.

  • Refunded transactions remain in the denominator. Voluntary refunds do not reduce the denominator. A merchant who issues many refunds (potentially preventing chargebacks) sees no benefit to their chargeback ratio from those refunds — the count of "successful card payments" stays the same.

  • Multi-currency merchants: The chargebacks report sums payment volume across all currencies without separation. If you process in multiple currencies (e.g., EUR and USD), the rate calculation combines them — interpret this number carefully.

For your forward-looking dispute exposure (not the rate, but the dollar amount currently at risk), see the Net Dispute Liability tile on the Disputes page.

All reports can be filtered by date range, store, and other relevant dimensions. Most reports are also exportable to CSV or PDF — see the Exporting Data article for details.
